Frequently Asked Questions

What grade of steel wool is this?

It is Ultra Fine #0000 steel wool, the finest common grade, ideal for applying wax and for final polishing. Pair it with finishes from our oils & waxes collection.

Why is oil-free steel wool important?

Standard steel wool can leave oily residue from manufacturing. Liberon steel wool is specially processed to remove all oil, preventing errant residue after applying finish or final polishing.

What makes Liberon steel wool different from generic steel wool?

It has longer fibers that create a more even, uniform scratch pattern, and it is treated to remove residual manufacturing oils, so no contaminants are left behind on your workpiece.

What sizes does it come in?

It's available in 100g, generally enough for most small to medium projects, and 250g for large projects or regular use.

Should I cut or tear the steel wool?

Cut it from the roll with scissors rather than tearing. Cutting better maintains the unique fiber structure that gives the uniform scratch pattern.

Can I use this steel wool to apply wax?

Yes. It is recommended for applying Liberon Black Bison and Special Effects waxes, and it works well with many other finishes. Browse oils & waxes to pair with it.

Is this steel wool good for polishing an existing finish?

Yes. It works great for final rubbing out and polishing of existing finishes, giving a smooth, residue-free surface. See our topcoat finishes.

Which size should I buy for a large project?

Choose the 250g size, which the description notes is a lot of steel wool, ideal if you foresee regular use or have a large project. The 100g size suits small to medium jobs.

Can I use it with finishes other than wax?

Yes. While recommended for Liberon waxes, it can be used to apply many other types of finishes and for polishing. Explore more wood stains & finishes.

Will this steel wool leave residue on my workpiece?

No. Because the residual manufacturing oils have been removed, it leaves no oily contaminants behind, giving a clean surface for finishing or polishing.
