Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a router that accepts a 1/2" collet?

Yes. These bits have a 1/2" shank, so your router must accept a 1/2" collet, which most mid-size and full-size routers do. If you only have a 1/4" collet, see our 1/4" shank straight bits instead.

Why choose a 1/2" shank over 1/4"?

A 1/2" shank has more mass and stiffness, so it resists deflection and vibration. This delivers smoother cuts and lets you run taller cutters and deeper passes safely, especially in hardwoods.

What does the plunge point do?

It lets you lower the bit straight down into the middle of a workpiece to begin an interior cut. The point cuts a smooth entry and the bit leaves a flat bottom, which standard straight bits cannot do cleanly.

What cutter diameters and heights are available?

These bits come in 1/2" and 3/4" cutter diameters with cutter heights of 1", 1-1/2", and 2", so you can match the bit to the depth of cut you need.

What is downshear cutting geometry?

Downshear geometry angles the cutting edges to push chips downward, producing ultra-smooth cuts on the top face of the stock and reducing tear-out in veneered panels and plywood.

What projects are these bits suited for?

They are ideal for dadoes, rabbets, deep mortises, stopped grooves, and pattern routing. The tall cutters and rigid shank make them a good choice for heavier joinery work.

Can I plunge to full depth in one pass?

For best results, plunge in shallow steps rather than dropping to full depth at once. This keeps the cut clean, reduces strain on the bit, and takes full advantage of the flat-bottom design.

Are these bits good for router table use?

Yes. The rigid 1/2" shank performs especially well table-mounted. Pair them with our router table accessories for controlled, repeatable cuts.

Who makes these router bits?

They are manufactured by Infinity Cutting Tools. Explore the full selection of carbide router bits for sets and specialty profiles.

What overall lengths do these bits have?

Overall length ranges from 2-1/2" to 3-1/4" depending on the cutter diameter and height you select.
