Water-Based Polyurethane Top Coats for Interior & Exterior Wood

General Finishes water-based top coats deliver professional-grade protection with the low odor, fast recoat times, and easy cleanup that oil-based finishes can't match. Each of the three formulas in this collection is engineered for a specific application, so choosing the right one makes a meaningful difference in the final result.

The General Finishes High Performance Top Coat is the go-to interior finish for furniture, cabinets, and built-ins. It dries water-clear, recoats in one to two hours, and is compatible with virtually every water-based stain — including the full range of water-based dye and pigmented stains in our collection.

When you want the warmth of an oil-based finish without the fumes or extended dry time, the General Finishes Enduro-Var II Top Coat is the answer. It ambers the wood to mimic a traditional oil-based poly and can be polished to a high gloss on raw or freshly stained surfaces.

Exterior Protection: Enduro-Var II vs. Exterior 450

For outdoor projects, the General Finishes Exterior 450 Clear Top Coat is formulated to expand and contract with the wood through seasonal moisture changes. It is UV-stable, works on both wood and fiberglass, and is not intended for horizontal deck surfaces. Pair any of these top coats with a wood stain from our wood stain collection for a complete finishing system.

  • High Performance: interior, dries clear, recoat 1–2 hours
  • Enduro-Var II: amber tone, ultra-hard, polishes to high gloss
  • Exterior 450: UV-stable, expands with wood, not for decks

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between General Finishes High Performance and Enduro-Var II?

High Performance dries water-clear and is ideal when you want the stain color to show without any toning. Enduro-Var II ambers slightly like an oil-based poly, adding warmth to raw or stained wood, and can be polished to a higher gloss. Both are interior products.

Can I use Exterior 450 on a wood deck?

No. The Exterior 450 Clear Top Coat is not formulated for horizontal deck surfaces where standing water and heavy foot traffic are factors. It is designed for vertical and protected exterior wood and fiberglass surfaces such as doors, trim, and outdoor furniture.

How long do I need to wait between coats of water-based polyurethane?

General Finishes High Performance Top Coat can typically be recoated in one to two hours under normal shop conditions (70°F, 50% humidity). Enduro-Var II and Exterior 450 have slightly longer recoat windows — always check the label for current specifications since ambient temperature and humidity affect dry times.

Is water-based polyurethane as durable as oil-based?

Modern water-based formulas like General Finishes High Performance are very durable and suitable for furniture, cabinets, and floors. They tend to be harder and more scratch-resistant than traditional oil-based products, though oil-based finishes build film faster per coat.

Will water-based poly yellow or amber over time?

High Performance is formulated to stay water-clear and resist yellowing, making it ideal over white or light-colored stains. Enduro-Var II intentionally ambers to replicate the warm tone of an oil-based finish. If color stability matters, use High Performance.

Can I apply Exterior 450 over wood stain?

Yes. Exterior 450 is compatible with properly cured water-based stains. For a complete exterior finishing system, apply a stain from the wood stain collection, let it cure fully, then topcoat with Exterior 450.

Do I need to sand between coats of water-based polyurethane?

Light scuff-sanding with 320-grit between coats improves adhesion and removes dust nibs for a smoother build. The final coat typically does not need sanding unless you plan to buff or polish it to a higher sheen.

What stains are compatible with General Finishes water-based top coats?

All three General Finishes top coats in this collection are compatible with the General Finishes water-based dye and pigmented stains. Enduro-Var II is specifically recommended over raw or freshly stained wood rather than over existing finishes.

What is Infinity Tools' quality guarantee on finishing products?

Infinity Tools backs every product with a quality guarantee. Visit the Quality Guarantee page for terms, or contact us directly with any product concerns.

Can Enduro-Var II be used over existing finishes for a refinishing project?

No. Enduro-Var II is formulated for raw or freshly stained wood only and should not be applied over existing cured finishes. For refinishing over an existing topcoat, General Finishes High Performance Top Coat is the better choice after light sanding to scuff the surface.
