Frequently Asked Questions

What is a lock miter shaper cutter used for?

It cuts an interlocking 45° miter that makes strong, self-aligning corners for boxes, columns, and flat panel glue-ups. See our other Shape-Up shaper cutters.

What stock thickness does it work with?

The Shape-Up Lock Miter cutter works with stock from 1/2" to 1" thick.

What bore size does this cutter have?

It has a 3/4" bore for mounting on a standard shaper spindle.

How do I cut a 90-degree lock miter joint?

Make the first cut with the stock flat on the shaper table, then make the second cut with the face against the fence. The two interlocking profiles register together for a tight corner.

Can it be used for flat glue joints too?

Yes. For a flat glue-up, run one piece face down and the mating piece face up so the profiles interlock edge to edge.

What are the cutter dimensions?

The cutter is 3-3/4" in diameter with a 1" cutter height.

What is the carbide quality like?

It uses extra-thick micrograin carbide that supports multiple sharpenings, plus a silver anti-stick coating that resists pitch and resin buildup. Find sharpening supplies in our sharpening supplies.

Why does a lock miter joint make stronger corners?

The interlocking profile dramatically increases the glue surface area and mechanically aligns the parts, producing a corner that is much stronger than a plain 45° miter.

Do I need a shaper or can I use a router?

This is a shaper cutter with a 3/4" bore and requires a shaper. For router-based lock miters, browse our carbide router bits.

Who makes this lock miter cutter?

It is made by Infinity Cutting Tools as part of the Shape-Up program. For higher-volume shops, compare the Insert Pro shaper cutters.
