Water-based finishes dry faster, emit fewer volatile organic compounds, and clean up with water, but they raise the grain more on the first coat and may appear clearer and cooler in tone. Proper preparation includes sanding through a logical grit sequence to remove mill marks and scratches, raising and re-sanding the grain if using a water-based finish, and removing all dust with a vacuum and tack cloth. Most professional finishers apply a minimum of three coats — a sealer or thin first coat to raise and lock in the grain, a second full coat for build, and a third coat for the final surface. More coats are used when high sheen or maximum protection is desired. Lightly sanding between each coat with 320-grit paper ensures good adhesion and removes dust nibs.

Always work in a well-ventilated area away from open flames or sparks when using solvent-based finishes, as the vapors are flammable and toxic. Wear a respirator rated for organic vapors, not just a dust mask. Dispose of solvent-soaked rags by spreading them flat outdoors to dry before disposal, as bunched oily rags can spontaneously combust.

Most wood finishes can be brushed, wiped, or sprayed depending on the product formulation and the finish type. Brushing works well for oil-based products and thicker varnishes, wiping is common for oil finishes and Danish oil, and spraying with an HVLP system produces the finest atomization and most even film build for lacquers and water-based finishes.
