Hand Planes

A scrub plane is used to rapidly remove material from rough lumber, flatten a cupped or twisted board, and bring a workpiece down to approximate thickness before finer planes take over.

A jack plane is shorter and is used for initial smoothing and dimensioning after the scrub plane. A jointer plane is longer, which allows it to bridge low spots and produce a truly flat, straight surface across the full length of a board.

A rabbet plane cuts rabbets (stepped recesses along the edge of a board) for joinery such as frame-and-panel backs, drawer bottoms, and tenon shoulders. The blade extends to the full width of the plane sole for edge-to-edge cutting.

The skewed rabbet plane has its blade set at an angle to the direction of travel, which produces a slicing cut that reduces tearout on cross-grain cuts and difficult grain directions.

Flatten the back of the blade on a sharpening stone, then hone the bevel to a fine edge using progressively finer grits — typically 1000, 4000, and 8000 grit water stones or diamond plates. A leather strop removes the wire edge for a razor-sharp result.
