General Finishes

General Finishes produces gel stains, water-based and oil-based dye stains, pigmented stains, water-based and oil-based topcoats, exterior finishes, paints, waxes, oils, and specialty products like wood bowl finish and transtint dyes — covering nearly every wood finishing need.

Water-based products dry faster, clean up with water, and have lower VOC emissions, but may raise the wood grain slightly and require de-nibbing between coats. Oil-based products like gel stains and Arm-R-Seal dry more slowly, penetrate deeper, and impart a warmer amber tone that many woodworkers prefer for traditional furniture.

The General Finishes High Performance Top Coat is a popular choice for tabletops and high-wear surfaces due to its hardness, clarity, and compatibility with water-based stains. The Arm-R-Seal Topcoat is preferred when a warmer, oil-based look is desired.

Yes. Combining dye stains and gel stains is a common professional technique. A dye stain applied first adds transparent color that highlights wood figure; the gel stain layer applied on top adds depth, fills grain, and provides more uniform color. Always allow each coat to dry fully before applying the next.

General Finishes Transtint Dyes are highly concentrated, soluble dyes that can be mixed into water, alcohol, or oil-based finishes to tint them. They are used to custom-blend colors, add pop-and-grain definition, or shade finished surfaces with very transparent layers.

The General Finishes Wood Bowl Finish is designed for wooden bowls and surfaces that come into contact with food once fully cured. As with all oil-based finishes, it should be allowed to cure completely before use with food.

The Exterior 450 Clear Top Coat is formulated with UV inhibitors and exterior-grade resins for use on outdoor furniture, doors, and trim that need protection from sun and moisture exposure.
